For me, the most rewarding aspect of my career is the opportunity to mentor and develop my team members, helping them grow their career with confidence. There’s nothing more fulfilling than seeing someone I’ve coached apply their knowledge, tackle a challenge, and succeed. Watching their growth—whether it’s making a tough decision, mastering a new skill, or stepping up as a leader—reminds me why I love what I do.
Yes, I believe women in any industry will unfortunately always face challenges – whether it's being underestimated, having to prove ourselves more than our male counterparts, or navigating leadership dynamics. However, I’ve learned that knowledge is the ultimate equalizer. My approach has always been to become a subject matter expert—study, research, and stay ahead of the curve. When you are well-prepared and confident in your expertise, no one can question your right to be there. I’ve also learned to speak up, advocate for myself, and make sure my voice is heard. It’s not about fitting in—it’s about standing firm in your expertise, work ethic, and worth.
I wish I’d known earlier that you don’t need all the answers right away. Early in my career, I felt pressured to respond immediately, but I’ve learned that a thoughtful answer beats a quick one every time. It's okay to say, “Let me look into that and get back to you.” Taking the time to gather the facts and consult your resources before landing on a decision will always serve you—and your colleagues—better in the long run. Being knowledgeable is crucial, but knowing when to pause, research, and respond with confidence is a game-changer.
Be ready. Ready for the fast pace, the unpredictability, and the constant learning curve. This industry is always changing and no two days are ever the same. Flexibility is essential for success. I like to end my day organizing priorities, but by morning, everything could change. One minute, you’re on track; the next, you’re pivoting to something new and urgent. Embrace the chaos—adaptability is key. If you love learning, problem-solving, and growing, this field will keep you engaged for life.
As a kid growing up in a small Texas town, I fell in love with reading, and libraries were my favorite places. That’s why I admire Dolly Parton—not just for her music and business success, but for her commitment to giving back. Her Imagination Library has provided free books to over 850,000 children, ensuring every child, no matter their circumstances, has the chance to discover the joy of reading. That kind of impact is truly inspiring.
